Director of Finance, Nonprofit, Based Remote

We are looking for an experienced Director of Finance with a track record in the nonprofit sector to serve as the executive lead of the entire finance function. The Director of Finance will be responsible for ensuring mission and strategic alignment of all financial activities for the long-term sustainability of the nonprofit organization.

As Director of Finance, you will work closely with the leadership team and finance committee to effectively manage financial strategy and financial operations.

Responsibilities

  • Hire and train staff within the finance department, manage and develop one current team member (Controller). Develop and implement appropriate training and development opportunities for the team.
  • Oversee the month and year-end close out and reconciliation processes.
  • Prepare and present regular financial statements and analysis of accounts, including but not limited to monthly and year-end budget variance reports, cash flow reports, long-range forecasts, trend reports, and those reports necessary for the regular functioning of the organization.
  • Develop innovative solutions to challenges in areas such as financial strategies and systems, analysis, reporting, information dissemination, and the use of resources.
  • Maintain relationships with bank and other external stakeholders.
  • Ensure internal controls are in accordance with accounting best practices.
  • Establish and use effective methods to review and improve systems.
  • Develop, implement, and/or oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, investing, and payroll functions.
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget and manage cashflow.
  • Assist the Executive Team with financial aid awards.
  • Optimize the finance function and financial stability to ensure long-term success and financial sustainability.
  • Work with the other members of the Executive team to maintain the compensation structure and revise as needed.
  • Oversee the management of vendor records including W9s, contracts, insurance limits, and basic information.
  • Oversee the production of required documents for audit and tax processes – to include the preparation of the annual audit, 990, Form 5500, W2s and other employee taxes, 1099s, etc.
  • Provide specialist financial expertise, guidance, and professional support to the Board of Directors and Executive Team.
  • Maintain relationships with property landlords and assist in the review and implementation of leases.
  • Develop and manage integrated, automated financial management information systems.
  • Maintain compliance with and stay abreast of governmental regulations, accounting best practices, legal statutes, and other compliance bodies.
  • Maintain an understanding of industry-specific trends, activities, and best practices.
  • Engage with other members of the Executive Team to facilitate collaboration and ensure that all financial functions support the strategy and mission of the organization.
  • Assist the CEO with accreditation applications and renewals as required.
  • Provide strategic assistance with the development and advancement function of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain community relationships by attending various functions and meetings as a representative of the organization.
  • Work with the Director of Advancement to ensure the proper accounting for and tracking of fundraising monies.

 Experience/skills required

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, Master’s degree in business management or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of nonprofit leadership experience required, experience in an independent school highly preferred.
  • Current (dated within a year) Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage in a fast-paced and high-stress situation.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Educationally minded.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established policies and procedures.
  • Able to work independently and effectively with other team members.
  • Good team player and very reliable in working without close supervision.
