CFO Recruit is partnering a family office with a portfolio of businesses spanning the US and Canada. Our client is an established and fast growing family office, managing a diversified portfolio of investments, including wholly owned operational companies in manufacturing, technology, real estate, private equity, and venture capital.
An opportunity has arisen for a VP Finance to join the family office working fully remotely in any location across Canada. This role would suit a Director of Finance or CFO happy to take on a VP role or a Senior Controller ready to step up and will be a mix of operational and strategic responsibilities.
The VP Finance will report to and be a key strategic partner to the family office CFO and the executive team. The primary function of this role is to provide a high level of actionable financial reporting, budgeting and cash forecasting that aligns with the company’s growth plans. The role is a balance of process development, execution of strategy and maintaining controlled tactical execution in a rapidly changing environment.
The VP Finance will provide leadership and ownership of all elements of financial operations within the company and develop systems that can scale as the business continues to grow. The position provides the opportunity to work with a world class, entrepreneurial team across various functions of the company and will require creating and facilitating actionable reporting, datasets, reports, and systems. The VP Finance will provide leadership to the finance/accounting function and will operate both strategically and in a hands on executional capacity. With day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing, and controlling all financial-related activities of the company, the VP Finance will also build, mentor and scale the team as the company grows.
The VP Finance will have the following responsibilities:
- Mentor and lead finance direct reports, ensuring all documentation, deadlines, and KPIs are met.
- Manage the implementation, strategy, and ongoing compliance of a sophisticated multi company and country corporate structure.
- Oversee global full-cycle accounting and reporting, including preparation, evaluation, and presentation of individual and consolidated financial statements.
- Build and implement a seamless integration of a global banking infrastructure that includes credit cards, private banking, and crypto currency.
- Optimize the corporate ERP system and oversee the implementation of new modules in line with corporate strategy and goals.
- Oversee and manage all aspects of financial reporting across multiple business unit entities, including payables, receivables, payroll and tax, and consolidations.
- Lead, create, and manage cross functional budgeting and budget to actual process.
- Tax planning and corporate structuring for the international business structure and operations.
- Build and own corporate financial model and financial planning and analysis that includes all projected returns and budgets across all portfolio companies.
- Consolidation of monthly and annual books, management reporting within defined timelines.
- Provide foresight on changing compliance with regulatory and governmental agencies.
- Provide leadership in financial planning and management, ensuring the development of quarterly, annual, and long-term financial plans, budgets, and forecasts.
- Lead a review of financial operations to ensure timely and accurate reporting and forecasting ensuring the right KPIs are in place to support decision making.
- Provide executive management with advice on the financial implications and risks of business activities and make recommendations for mitigation.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.
- Participate in the leadership of strategic planning, providing recommendations to strategically enhance the financial performance and business opportunities for the organization.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, suppliers, banks, lenders, and vendors.
- Facilitate and lead annual financial statement audits, serving as a liaison with external auditors.
- Manage cash flow inputs from operating companies in the portfolio and develop comprehensive cash flow 13 week forecasts.
To be successful in this role the VP Finance will have the following experience:
- MBA or similar degree in accounting or finance; CPA/CA designation required.
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience as head of finance (VP Finance / CFO) in a growing organization with multi business segments.
- 5 years’ experience operating accounting, roll-up, and tax in complex operating and tax structures with a minimum of 40 entities operating globally.
- Minimum 10 years working with and/or reporting directly to founders/entrepreneurs that have a global footprint.
- Global accounting and tax experience with operations and reporting requirements across countries, ideally including Canada and the US.
- Experience in working with corporate financial modeling and investment analysis.
- Must thrive in fast-paced, rapid-change, high-growth environments.
- Track record of working with sales and marketing to create, execute, optimize and rethink, profitable growth strategies.
- Superior interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a variety of both internal and external teams.
- Successful leadership of ERP system implementations.
- Experience developing and mentoring a team of professionals into a high-performance team.
- Experience with formal reporting requirements for investors, boards of directors, and other stakeholders.
Desirable experience:
- Highly regulated industries.
- Real Estate, land development, construction industry experience.
- Establishing and managing international business units.
- Raising capital, preparing companies and leading them through exits.
- Experience with PCAOB audits and experience working through an IPO process.
- US markets – financial and tax.
- Experience in a high growth organization, private equity or owner led company.
