CFO Recruit is partnering a client in Anchorage to appoint a Controller. This is a critical role as the organization transitions to an independent financial structure. The Controller will be responsible for creating the finance and accounting function, implementing all finance and accounting operations for this large construction company. This is a unique opportunity for a strategic and hands-on finance leader to build an independent finance department from the ground up. This role would suit a Head of Finance, Comptroller, Accounting Manager or Director of Finance with the experience and capability to oversee all financial operations, ensuring compliance, implementing accounting systems, and providing strategic financial insights to support business growth. The Controller will have the following responsibilities:
- Support the CFO in the transition from using shared services to an independent finance and accounting department.
- Develop, recommend and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure efficiency, accuracy, compliance, and protect fiscal assets.
- Establish financial reporting structures, including month-end close processes and reconciliations.
- Hire, train, and develop an internal accounting team to support the company’s financial operations.
- Oversee the preparation of financial statements and variance analysis to provide the leadership team with insightful reporting.
- Support the CFO with management reports and performance analysis.
- Support the CFO in managing cash flow, as well as forecasting and budgeting to support company growth and financial stability.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, GAAP, tax regulations, and other financial reporting requirements.
- Develop and maintain relationships with auditors and regulatory authorities.
- Support the CFO with financial planning, risk assessment, and strategic decision-making.
In order to be successful in this role the Controller will have the following skills and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred)
- 7 years of experience in accounting or finance leadership, preferably in the construction or marine industry.
- Proven experience setting up or restructuring finance and accounting functions.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
